For as long as I’ve been fortunate to have kids AND a cold room, this problem has always bothered me. Kids go into the cold room to get something, turn the light on with the pull string, and leave the cold room. Some untold number of days later I go into the cold room and wonder how long that light has been on. #newhomebuilders are notorious for leaving basement lights, and specifically cold rooms, without a switch. It’s not usually until a basement gets finished that these pull-string lights are wired up with a light switch, which you could make smart. Add a few automations and your problem is solved. But what if you only have a pull string? What then?
With a lightening fast, Thread-enabled @meet_eve door and window sensor and a thread or wifi smart bulb like the @lifx A19 mini bulb, you can easily create automations to turn the light on and off according to the sensor state. Additional fail safes to turn off the bulb with timers and scenes make sure you’ll never illuminate your cold room needlessly again.

@meet_eve was kind enough to send me their newly released US eve energy with THREAD. Not only is this #smartplug lightening fast, but it acts as a border router to my #smarthome THREAD network, (working with my #homepodmini and newly released #appletv 4K) to create a #meshnetwork that my other THREAD devices (like the eve door and window sensor and eve weather) can connect to, decreasing latency and expanding the range of my smart home network.
I thought a THREAD smart plug was the perfect upgrade to the family aquarium lights so I could use @meet_eve’s energy tracking and see what sort of energy consumption my @aquatlantisaquarium Luminus light system is drawing and what are the actual monthly costs to run the lighting in the aquarium.
As an added bonus, I can control the aquarium lighting using #homekit and make sure my lighting and CO2 system are tied to the seasonal changes in ambient daylight through HomeKit automations!

One area often overlooked when making your home smart are your pets. Something as simple as a smart plug or switch controlling your lighting can give you far more control than an analog timer with pins!
This weekend we setup this beautiful 77 gallon aquarium and there were two opportunities to make the tank smart. The first was putting a meross smart plug mini on the lights to allow the tank to have a natural daylight rhythm using the sunrise/sunset timings in HomeKit. This will allow seasonality for the plants and fish that will mimic our daylight hours here!
The second was to add another smart plug to the CO2 system to make sure that it was only adding CO2 to the tank during the daylight hours when the aquarium LED lights are on, ensuring that the CO2 and pH levels aren’t affected by dosing when the lights are off. A simple automation for the CO2 system running from 1 hour after sunrise to 2 hours before sunset ensures that everything is in sync.
That’s your aquarium (or terrarium or vivarium or indoor garden!), smarter.
